Hi guys,

I've currently got a project to complete a short news video suitable for web use.

I shot it using the 7D and have additional audio using external equipment.

What is the best way to edit the footage? I'm having problems viewing the footage out of camera and could do with downsizing them (were shot at 1920-1080 '25) as I don't really need to have HD quality for my final output and due to their nature (dark, HIGH ISO) they would look better downsized anyway. I have Adobe Premiere CS3 but could also use a copy of CS4 if that helps? Is there any software about for me to convert and downsize the clips so that I can edit them easier and view them properly?

I'm running a Intel Core Duo T2350 1.86ghz, 2GB Ram. I know that's not ideal but there must be a way to be able to edit this footage somehow if I can downsize?

Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.

Cheers,
Adam

VIDEO
The difficulty your are having is common. Best option is to convert to a lost-less or near lost-less format and edit this. There are several ways to do this, three are shown below.

To make the footage editable w/o choppiness
Free: http://www.squared5.com/ (external link)
Free: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=815632
Cost (but free trial): http://www.cineform.com/neoscene/ (external link)

This will help you with the first 'free' method. This is for OS X, but there are Windows and OS X versions of the software http://philipbloom.co.uk …importing-and-conversion/ (external link)

-------
AUDIO

Audio: How did you record the audio? With Zoom recorders, you need to make the audio a little longer. Showed how in this video toward the end.

Cheers for the links. The audio was recorded with a Marantz and external microphone.

Any other tips?

Have you ever used PP? If not, Fast Color Corrector, sharpen and unsharp mask are very useful, depending on the situation.

When you encode using media encoder, make sure interpolate is not on. Can't remember if its on by default

Excellent thanks for that Dean, will give mpeg streamclip a go. RWatkins I really appreciate all of those links thanks. I have never used PP no so this is going to be quite a crash course in it. Have a week to edit a short news video!

My original footage is fairly noisy as it was shot on the 7D kit lens mostly at 6400 - was an indoor bungee in the dark so not much I could do as I no longer have my canon lenses. I'm figuring once I downsize it in the final edit for web view (400*---) or something then the IQ should look less noisy etc than when viewing full screen at 1080.

Dean: when I go to compression I don't have anywhere near the same amount of options as there are on the tutorial. Is that because i'm on windows? None of the presets are HD?

If you have lots of noise, PP has a noise reduction filter in the encoder, never used it though. There are also 3rd party plug-ins as well (e.g. Topaz, Neat ect...)

Thanks mate, managed to get all my files converted to mpegs using adobe media encoder cs4. Hopefully this will now be editable in premiere cs4 (had to upgrade). Need to then work out all the noise/colour etc etc stuff and then resizing to 720 for first output and then down again for web size output. All in a few days with an exam in between!

Following the advice in here:

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=815632

I converted to mpeg2 and tried editing, however my computer can't really handle it well enough. I then tried the 720 conversions to .mxf files and they run perfectly in PP - HOWEVER when viewed at 100% the image isn't sharp - it has vertical lines running over the top of the image.

I've uploaded a shot of it here: http://www.pbase.com/image/122747108 (external link)

Don't use P2 format. If anything, try using CS4 (updated to 4.2) and use AVC Intra, downsized to 720p. P2 is interlaced and will give you massive headaches down the road. Rolling shutter+interlacing+deinterlacing = very bad combo.

I'm using 4.2, how do I convert my files to AVC Intra?
