I am ready to buy my next 2 lenses but couldn't decide which to get. I am not a pro but have been paid to shoot sweet sixteen parties. I like to shoot almost everything - portraits, events, low lights and night shots, landscape, cityscape, nature, macro, sports, still life. I currently have 5D2, 7D, 17-40 4L, 70-300, 28-135, kenko extension tubes, canon close-up lens, couple flashes and lighting accessories. I definitely need a macro lens so I am getting the 100 2.8L Macro IS. I heard that this is also good for portraits. I need one that I can use for portraits and sports (HS sports). I am thinking of getting either the 85L, 85 1.8, 70-200 2.8L IS MK1 or MK2. I will also consider 24-70 2.8L but will wait for the IS version because I don't have steady hands. I don't know if I should consider 50 and 35. I also have been thinking of the 28-300mm L for family vacations. I like the all in one idea, no swtching glasses and seems to have good reviews but is not fast enough for low lights. Please help.

24-105 f/4 L IS is a nice fit on your 5D Mark II and a real nice fit on my 7D.
This is my go to lens. IS is outstanding.

a nice 85L or 85 1.8 would be nice for portraits.

I have considered this before but since I also shoot low light events, I need something faster.

When you say "nice", do you mean a good copy? If the 85 1.8 is good for portraits, then I will most likely get this since I have read a lot here that it is the go to lense for indoor sports. And I can still buy the 70-200 2.8L Mk1 or Mk2 for outdoor sports and everything else since this is a versatile lense.

Thanks for your feedback.

I spoke with a pro (portrait/wedding) today and said that the 85L is way better than the 85 1.8 and will never recommend the latter over the former. Has anyone used the 85L for indoor sports?

I actually prefer the 70-200 f4 IS over the 2.8. I find it's better outside and the slight edge inside does not justify the weight and costs. I find now it never leaves my camera. Just my opinion.

well that's like comparing apples to oranges. the price of a 85 1.8 it's a damn good lens. but if you got the cash of course go the L route.

I went to a store and the guy recommended the 24-70 and 70-200 combo. He said that the IS version of the 24-70 is not coming anytime soon when I asked him about it. He told me to get the primes later once I know the focal lengths I will be using most. I am afraid the 2.8s will not be enough in these not so well lit hs gyms. However, seeing this thread, https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=824116, it might work. What do you think guys?

The 70-200 with IS (either the 2.8 or 4) would be a good versatile choice.

The guy that's selling has no idea when the IS version of the lens will come out--no one here knows either. The 24-70 is a great lens. I don't find that I require IS at those focal lengths--especially at the wider portions. I do find it useful on my 24-105, but not nearly as important as on the 70-200 (I wouldn't purchase a lens that went past 100mm without IS).

That said, the 24-70 and 70-200 is a nice combo.

I have the 24/70 2.8 and the 70/200 L 2.8 IS, I would not be without either one of these, but I shoot lower light and do not like to add light. little more money ( but worth every dollar )

Thank you all for your feedback. Appreciate it very much. I have decided to go to the 24-70 and 70-200 combo route. But will be buying the 100 2.8L macro and the 24-70 first. Then the 70-200 2.8 is (mk 1 or 2) this summer.
