GATLINBURG (WATE) - Crews doing much needed repairs on Cades Cove Loop Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park got back to work Wednesday.
The $6.7 million project was shut down Monday, just hours after it began because of a federal furlough.
Legislation was blocking all federal highway projects, but an agreement ended brought an end to that.
The furlough cost crews two days of work, but park officials are confident Cades Cove Loop Road will re-open on schedule.
"With a two day interruption, I don't think that will really put a big kink in the contract work," says park spokeswoman Nancy Gray.
Park visitors, like Robert LeJeune, of Arkansas, are anxious for Cades Cove Loop Road to re-open. "Makes your mind wonder how it was back then when it was really nice."
Diagrams displayed in the visitor's center show what the improvements will look like. Crews will re-pave the road, and add more drainage.
This portion of the park hasn't had a major improvement since 1973.
Park officials say they want the construction done as soon as possible because Cades Cove is so popular. It draws 1.5 million visitors annually.
"It's a tourist magnet, number one," Gray says. "It's the most visited section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and many of the surrounding communities rely on business to Cades Cove."
Construction is supposed to be complete on Cades Cove Loop Road by May 22. The summer months are some of the busiest for the park.
