I love to shoot while on vacation and I really want to buy the Canon 10-22 ultra wide angle lens but just can't afford it.

Do many people around here rent lenses for their vacations? Typically how much does it cost to rent one? For the week?

Wow. That's tough. Amazon is having a no-interest 12 month sale for lenses. That one is one of them. But you can rent lenses for a week at a time. It is expensive, though. Penn Camera here in the DC area or some local shops can lead you to the places near your home.

Try lensrentals.com (external link). I have rented from them many times and can't say enough about their service or quality of lenses. I routinely rent for summer vacation. It's a great time to try something new and play with different perspectives. For less than $200 last summer I got a two week rental of a 300 f4 IS along with a 1.4x converter and a set of close-up kenko tubes. I had a blast shooting everything from birds, to flowers, to sunsets with the various combinations.

Do it and have fun!!!

You could try a local shop...there's one down the street here that rents lenses for about 15 dollars a day, and the weekend counts as Friday, so that's really only 15 x 5, or 75 dollars.

Or you could post something on the forums, and ask if someone will lend you their lens for a fee (and a deposit).

Or I suppose you could cheat a bit and buy it from Amazon; it's a 30 day return policy (perhaps you could deceive yourself into thinking there's a chance you'll love it so much that you'll keep it...)

Renting can turn into buying if you like it enough. If you rent from a local shop you can often get the rental to apply to the purchase if you decide to get one.

I rented a 100-400 from lensgiant.com and it was awesome. Cost me around 80 bones for 5 days w/ Insurance. I'd say well worth it. A tear falls from the eye when you have to return it though...

I can recommend LensRentals.com too. Great service. I just rented the EF 400mm f/5.6L again for 2 weeks for $134 including insurance and shipping both ways. The lens also showed up a day early for no extra charge. :D

I've heard a lot of good things about them and the owner does post here.

That 400/5.6 has moved to the top of my want list.

+1, i rented a bunch of gear from them for about 2 1/2 weeks. The customer service was lightning quick and excellent! Highly recommended.

Don't be afraid to check locally as well. There might be a good place near you that's reasonable. I spent a summer renting lenses to decide what to buy, and it was very valuable experience.
