I bought the parts to build my computer and was reading the motherboard manual and it says

"A RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration requires at least two hard drives. If more than two hard drives are to be used, the total number of hard drives must be an even number "

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Drives... So, yes, you would need more than one drive, but RAID is not required. By default RAID would not be used. You have to set it up before installing your OS. If you are interested in using RAID you should read up on the drawbacks and benefits.

You can find a very good explanation of all the RAID arrays here:

As a suggestion, even if you don't have money for a second drive right now, it would be a good idea to get it some time soon, since having RAID1 array will mirror your data on 2 drives and in an unfortunate case, when one drive fails, you have all your data intact on the second drive.

You never know when it is going to happen. I was very lucky. I bought a 500gb Seagate drive about a year ago for my home desktop. About 6 months ago, I purchased a second Seagate drive and set up a mirror.

Little did I know about the 7200.11 drive firmware bug, and last week, one of the mirrored drives bricked. I got notice that one of the drives had failed, so I shut down and ghosted a backup copy of my data to a spare drive just in case. About 8 hours later, the other mirror drive bricked itself.

Both under warranty, but rack it up to bad luck that both had the bad flash bios. Took a week to get them replaced with replacement 7200.12 drives (thank you seagate for the upgrade) and the mirror is rebuilt.

Had I not had that second drive in mirror, good bye a whole lot of data. Reminded me that I need to be more vigilant on making backups too.

Matt.

Offsite backups protect against drive failure, fire, theft, and user stupidity - that last one's a killer!
