Wow... color me impressed. Upgraded from the old model 17-70 (which was a great lens in its own right) and I am very happy.

Great build, very beefy... looks great on my 50D. Autofocus is quick and silent with almost no hunting. OS seems good but I haven't really put it through its paces yet. And it is sharp! Even at 2.8 and with just a bit of softness at 70mm @ f/4 (if you peep).

Now I just have to get out and about with it.

All around, very happy... and highly recommend this lens. Some test samples below. All have minor PP and sharpening.

17mm @ f/2.8

And again, 70mm @ f/4 macro... the gun is touching the front element of the lens.

nice shots. Is this lens the new one that was just announced a couple weeks ago? If so, what's the price for these?

How's this rate against that 24-70mm 2.8L lens from Canon?

Completely different lenses:

Canon: constant aperture, L-build quality, true usm
Sigma: wider focal range, os, "fake" usm, variable aperture

Now you've done it. As if I haven't overanalyzed enough, I had pretty much decided on Sigma's 18-50 2.8 macro, or Canon's 15-85 (which is a tad overpriced), to replace my older 17-70. I just don't care for the "gear whine" which is why Tammy's 17-50 isn't an option. The one review I read on this lens was mediocre, so I appreciate your post. Quick, silent, OS, sharp.....VERY intriguing.

Not to mention on a crop body the Canon lens is effectively a 38 - 112.

This lens looks excellent Mightyslam, good to hear there's another great lens on the market.

at what focal point does the aperture change from 2.8? It's an interesting lens and the price is cheap which is very attractive.

Somewhere around the 22mm range.

I so wish Sigma or Tamron would come out with a FF version of this lens with OS (24/28-70).

My experience with this lens seems to mirror mightyslams. I have been very happy with mine for the month or so I have owned it. Very fast focus and the OS is fantastic.

This thread has me seriously tempted to move to the HSM version of this lens. I have the 2.8-4.5 version now and really like it. It does not help that Abes of Maine has the 2.8-4 for only $404 with free shipping.

If you don't mind me asking, how are you finding it for 404? I'm seeing it listed as 449. I'm definitely pulling the trigger on this is it's 404 there.
