Have we come to the point where Canon has released a non-1D camera that is not for DSLR beginners? I can't help but wonder about this. There have been so many threads about AF issues, sharpness and noise about the 7D and more often than not it has been operator fault or pure ignorance.

The 7D is a big step up from the xxD bodies and really requires the photographer to understand what he/she is doing - in many ways it is an unforgiving camera. Underexpose your pic and you will have more noise than you are used to. Use the wrong settings for the AF and your pictures will come out blurred. Use a not-so-great lens and your IQ will suffer.

Should the advice for new or inexperienced DSLR users be - stay away from the 7D? What do you think?

Bravo 5Dmaniac, Your summary, I believe, is correct. How much more can you say other than: If you are in learning mode from the XTi or lesser camera then you need to realize that you are in for a more professional-level challenge from the 7D, but (then show a few examples from the knowledgeable people here who have startling results) Look what you can strive for and achieve for your extra efforts.

Struggling amateurs, like myself, will need to give this camera and themselves, time to bring everything up to controlled results like these. I'm giving myself two years before I say a word, because I feel it will take me that long to run through two good outdoor shooting seasons and begin to realize some mastery of the 7D.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. I went from a 40D to a 7D, and the only thing I am dissapointed about is that now I need a faster memory card to keep up with the 7D.

Comming from a 40D, the transition was almost seamless. I read the manual for about an hour on the new AF system, and the wireless flash, and I went out and tested out both of those features, and voila, good to go.

Im in the same boat, although I understand the possibility of 7Ds out there that are indeed problematic. they just happen to likely fall into the hands of less experienced users so that magnifies the problem.

My photography-related addiction makes a crack habit look like a fiscally responsible pasttime.

I don't have that kind of time. Maybe an inning or two then switch back to the MK3, examine the images ASAP and tweak the settings. Hopefully by the third game, It'll be right on (fingers crossed).
