I thought I would sell some of my cheap lenses to save up for better ones, but today I finally sold all of them: EF 24mm f/2.8, EF 50mm f/1.8, EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6
Still have an old MF lens to use with my 50D body, the FD 135 f/2.0

Any idea what to do now? :)

I'm thinking EF-S 10-22/3.5-4.5, 17-55/2.8, EF 50/1.4 and EF 70-200/4L IS
or maybe Sigma 30 f/1.4, EF-S 15-85/3.5-5.6 and EF 70-200/4L IS

The reason why I'm now hesitant is because I think, subconsciously, I'm thinking of selling the 50D body and use Canon instant rebate program for the 5D Mk2 24-105/4 kit + EF 16-35 :D
Am I wrong to assume that 5D2 + 24-105/4 + 16-35 should be able to accomplish my wish list above? (with the exception of the 70-200, of course)

I'd like to have as minimum number of lenses as possible, without going crazy (e.g.: 28-300) or at lower IQ (EF-S 18-200)

Anybody ever experience something similar?
What would you do if you were in my shoes?

I'm not a pro, just a hobbyist (not even an amateur).
From my experiences so far, I often shoot landscape (sunset/sunrise), city/streets lights, and occasionally portraits of love ones. Oh yeah, I suck using flash and I try to use natural lights.
I also get bored easily (it's bad, I know) - and really love trying/learning new things

Thanks in advance for your feedbacks

EDIT: here's my flickr page, just in case you're curious about the kind of shots move me.

I'd probably go with the following:
Tokina 11-16mm ƒ/2.8
Sigma 17-70mm ƒ/2.8-4 OS HSM
Canon 70-200mm ƒ/4L IS
Sigma 50mm ƒ/1.4

That way you would have a dedicated wide angle, a very nice walk around, something for the telephoto side and a fast prime. The Sigma 17-70mm has near macro capabilities so it can focus very closely which should lead to some creative images for you.

Apparently I've been dubbed Foxy.

- Sigma 17-70 OS or Canon 15-85 IS - the Sigma is close-focusing, which is nice if you don't need a dedicated macro
- Canon 70-200
- Sigma 30

personally I would take the 5d2 with the 24-105 and the 16-35 or the choice with the 17-55. I have a 17-55 on the way and I plan to sell my lenses as well.

5D II with 24-105 is an excellent choice.

I thought the OP said he had a 50D and was asking about lenses.

The 5dII with just the 24-105 is a great all around choice. If you wanted to save some money, you could perhaps go with the 17-40 instead of the 16-35 and toss in a 50 1.4 if you are into primes and want a low light lens. You'd be covered really well from very wide to moderately long--and you and crop 5dII pictures pretty substantially and still have plenty of pixels.

I over sold all my lenses now what

>> they do not have chips available for all older AF lenses

That is exactly why I think its not a good idea to buy old Sigma lenses. Also, re-chipping is not free in all countries e.g. in Israel it is 70-100, depending on lens. Check with your local importer.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

If I were you, I would first make my decision on either going FF or staying with a crop frame camera. That's where you can start choosing lenses.

For a crop frame I would go for:

- Tokina 11-16 f/2.8
- Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
- 70-200 f/4L IS

For a FF body though, you would be doing really good with 16-35 and 24-105, however you will be missing some reach, actually when compared to 200mm on a crop frame you would be missing some 215mm of reach. So first decide if you need the reach, or if you prefer to go FF. Then it's going to be easier, as upgrading later on might be a bit of a problem since, as far as I know, the Tokina 11-16, and Canon 17-55 don't work on a FF body.

Another thought, 5D2 should be better for both portraits and landscapes, and for these 2 you don't need 200mm (or 320mm on FF) lens.

Ok, my guess from the sounds of what you do, you need fast primes. I base this on the comment where you say you are bored, or get bored easily. it's easy to get bored with a standard lens if you aren't shooting something specific. You need something that can melt backgrounds away and give more of an artistic spin on boring subjects.

It doesn't sound like you need a body upgrade. If I were you, stick with 50d, buy sigma 30 1.4 and 50 1.4. Maybe a canon 85 1.8 or wait for sigma 85 1.4. Get a wide angle for those landscapes, either canon 10-22 or tokina 11-16 (endless threads on the 2, both great, both different purposes to some degree) and then go from there. If you miss a zoom, then pick one up later.

Again, this is going from what you posted and how I interpret why you get bored with your old equipment. the 30 will be a great normal lens, 50 for portraits, and wide for city/sunsets/architecture and all with natural light since they are all fast.

cheers

Get the best of the best for Crop.

Tokina 11-16, Sigma 30/1.4 a good mid range zoom (17-55, 17-50 any of them really) and either a 50-135 Tokina or a 70-200 IS if you need image stabilization.

Don't settle for anything less.

Oh, I just reread your post.....No, you aren't crazy!

If I were you, seeing what you shoot, I'd definitely go full frame. If you have the cash a 5d mark II with a 24-105, 50 1.4 prime would be great.... the 16-35 is debatable.

5d2 + 24-70/24-105 + Low light prime and either a zoom past 70 OR something wider than 24 would be a great kit.

I'm thinking EF-S 10-22/3.5-4.5, 17-55/2.8, EF 50/1.4 and EF 70-200/4L IS

This is a very awesome lineup on the crop body camera. I have these three and use them all the time. The 17-55MM f/2.8 EF-S IS on my 30D is my main wedding rig :)

Jim -- I keep the Leica D-Lux 7 in the Glove Box just in case!

wow, thanks for the responses.
I like all the suggestions - starting to see some lights now.

Range: I think I won't be needing the 70-200 anytime soon (never owned any tele other than the 28-135, so I wouldn't know), only wish for one when I go to the zoo or trying to capture that sunset over water :D - I do love wide angle, that's for sure.

Speed: I definitely could use one fast prime, either the sigma 30/1.4 or canon 50/1.4 - I know that 50mm is too long on crop.

Body: I did some rough calculations:
A) crop: 10-22 + 15-85 + 30/1.4 = ~$1800
B) FF: 5DM2 + 24-105 (kit) + 50/1.4 - 50D (~$700) = ~$3000
The difference is ~$1200, wow, that's the price of the 70-200/4 IS !!

Hmm... that's interesting :)

50mm IS NOT TOO LONG ON A CROP. man, I see this all over the place, it's ridiculous. 50 on a crop is ~80mm, which is perfect for portraits. I mean, 85 1.2 is often considered the best portrait lens on FF, how can 80 be too long on crop?

also, how can everyone be recommending the 5d2 route for him? he is hardly shooting as it is, how does upgrading the body make sense?

if anything, if you want FF get a 5dc. 5dc is still a great camera, and if you don't need video or high ISO performance, then this might be a good option.

I don't see you sinking serious money into a body making much financial sense for you. just my opinion. of course everyone wants a 5d2 and a 200L 2.0, and a 500L, and a 70-200 2.8L II, but I mean come on, there is a point where gear isn't the solution.
