i came across a good local deal. now ive done a side by side comparison on dpreview and the stats are very similar other then the megapixels.

i currently have the xsi and am looking to upgrade to something better. i guess what im asking is for your professional opinion and thoughts if the 40D is a better upgraded than the xsi to which i have already

Thanks.

40D: better spot metering, bigger battery, better build mag alloy body, much finer adjustment of iso to 3200, seperate controls for aperture and shutter speed, redundant LCD display, faster shutter, better (arguably) shutter mechanism, weather sealed (somewhat).

the photosensor and high ISO noise is similar on the two. i've used the 450D, 1000D, and 40D, and would argue that the 40D, STILL comes out on top--but not by much.

The 40D came out only 6 months earlier than the XSi/450D. They both have the same Digic III processor with 14 bit conversion.

The 40D has a better AF system (9 cross type sensors), a better viewfinder, optional focusing screens, faster top shutter speed, faster sync speed, faster frames per second, larger JPEG/RAW buffer, sRaw option, ISO 3200, optional Kelvin white balance, larger battery, shorter shutter lag, shorter mirror blackout, weather sealed battery door, hotshoe weather seal surround (for 580EX II) , and of course much better build and ergonomics.

The 40D is the best camera buy right now. It does everything really well at a price that can't be beat.

if you feel lucky not getting a used 40D with the err99 and shutter problems (do a search here - some say that model is cursed!)
it could be worth it but then again the 450D has better image quality!

“The new 450D sensor is superb, and from a resolution point of view puts the EOS 40D to shame without losing any of the high ISO performance that has been Canon’s trump card for so long.” ...." in fact these are some of the most detailed results we’ve ever seen from a non-professional Canon DSLR thanks to what appears to be a slightly lighter anti alias filter (certainly compared to the 40D, for example).”

I'd go with the 40D because of the better build quality. The xxxD series always felt too small in my hands so that's why I just use my 30D (yes I know it's getting old, but the image quality is quite good and I feel lenses are a better investment right now)

Canon 30D with a varied assortment of lenses... and growing ;)
