I don't get to see the ones with the cheek mounts. They have so many variants of the "J" that it should have a sub designation? Ja, Jb...

The cheek mounted 0.50's came into service with the B-25H's and was then carried through the B-25J's. The early style was 2 0.50's in a single pod on each side, then later versions was the 2 individual pods on each side like you see here. I don't think there was a variation in the dash number to distinguish this change though.

A lot of variations were "field mods" that were never really standardized.

Crews added guns, armor, etc. as they saw fit to protect themselves.

You're absolutely right. Unfortunately there is no possible way of documenting or tracking all of the different field mods that were done on any of these airplanes during combat. I'm sure there was some pretty cool stuff done!
