So, I bought a Mvix media center/player (http://www.thinkgeek.com …/home-entertainment/bd4f/ (external link)) and I was buying a hard drive for it, and I found a HD from WD called the AV-GP, meant for surveillance, video streaming and constant I/O

I got the 1.5 TB AV-GP drive from WD.

Now I'm wondering, whats the difference from any other drive? I'll assume that its not meant to be spun up and down that many times, and thermal design is optimized, but besides that, is there anything else?

I'm no authority on the subject, this is just what I've heard from podcasts (HT guys podcast, I think) and other reads on the subject.... basically they are exactly the same as any other given hard drive from same manufacturer with same specs (rotation speed, cache)... just a different label on the box. In short, nothing wrong with them, just don't get roped into buying them if retailer tries to push a significant cost bump... I honestly can't recall reading about an HTPC builder specifically recommending AV drives anytime recently.

I know this is wikipedia, so take this link for what its worth. ;)
