I have just noticed my 5D (mark 1) doing this recently .. consistently, when taking photos an odd horizontal banding appears in the top quarter of the image. eg -

and closeup:

I tried searching the web but haven't found any answers. Has anyone else come across this? Is my sensor fubared? :(

What settings and type of lighting?

Cactus Trigger transmitter on top or other nearby source of RF?

Yep. That herringbone pattern is the signature of RFI (radio frequency interference).

Funny, this problem seems to come up with 5D (first generation) more than any other Canon...

Happened with mine quite often whenever I took it with me to broadcast compounds and got too close to uplink trucks. Kind of makes me wonder what all that energy is doing to my soft tissues as well.

Thats usually caused by some kind of wireless flash triggering. The rf 602 triggers don't seem to do it for me tho =)

Heh. As you know, low frequency RFI has no impact on our bodies other than heating. By "low frequency" I mean anything that we are currently using for communications.

Way back in '63 or '64 I worked with a guy who had just gotten out of the US Air Force. He had worked on radar and said the guys would go up into the radome when it was really cold outside (in Alaska) for shelter. It was really nice when the beam swept past and warmed him up. (Not kidding.)

Heating is exactly what our microwave ovens do.

It's non-ionizing radiation which is benign. Unlike X-rays or gamma rays.

You know that, but I thought I'd mention it for those who don't know the difference...

Interesting. Thanks for the heads up. May have to do with the thick ribbon cables on the main PCB making a nice antenna.

thanks guys, removing the ebay flash trigger did indeed work :) odd ... could have sworn i've used it before on the 5d before without problems. is there any way to prevent it from happening? I don't really have any money to afford pocket wizards or something similar for my flashes.

I've never had the problem since I don't use wireless triggers. Others have reported success by changing the channel - can you do that?

Didn't Cactus make "shields" of some kind for their Tx?

I wonder if one could create a DIY solution with Cine-Foil or similar?
