Just got my brand new Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM...very excited. More so because my wife and I are going to the USA at the end of the month.....Just wondering if anyone can advise on settings they have/would use for everyday photo taking, or any tips on settings they like for whatever reason.... f-stop etc, shutter speeds, ISO etc

Cheers in advance!!!!
Gary

That lens is sharp wide open and at all other apertures. Use what ever aperture you want to get the right exposure. You can't go wrong.

Great advice but you also need to practice before hand to understand it better. Takes a lot of time to go from barely understanding -> knowledge -> automatic reaction.

The shutter speed has no effect on the lens - and I would agree with Mike inasmuch as you can use any aperture with confidence. Having said that, I don't think I've ever used mine smaller that f/11.

My favorite lens. You are going to have a great time.
Use it with IS all the time, except when you are using a tripod.
I usually let the camera choose the best exposure in P mode.
Always use the hood on.
Don't use a filter unless it is really necesary. I mean, don't use a "protective" filter.

Don't leave it in P mode, practice in Av mode at least but read the book it will help immensely.

if you're "barely understanding" then keep shooting everything.... Use AV alot and learn how the aperture settings affect your pictures. Then read "Understanding Exposure." When I was starting out it was hard to read any books since I didn't really understand it. But that book was great!

It looks pretty sharp to me, but try Canon's software that comes on the CD. Other than that, usual editing software, lightroom, photoshop, if your a Mac user then either of those programs or iPhoto, Aperture.

I would shoot aperture priority, keep it on f/4 adjust ISO based on available lighting.

Why would you want to keep it on f/4?
