I just came across an article on tweakers.net (dutch tech-news site) that linked to this website:

http://www.hdrlabs.com/occ/index.html (external link)

Basically it can turn a Nintendo DS into an advanced canon remote control. By advanced I mean advanced!

Things like timelapse, unlimited bracketing and sound activated shutter release. With some coding, I'm also hoping it will support focus stacking like DSLR remote pro can (automatically increasing the focus distance).

i don't know... i can't remember the last time I was ever in a situation where I needed to set my camera in a spot, walk far, far away from it, and then trigger it to take a picture with a sophisticated remote control. What would this be useful for.. hidding your 40D in a women's change room or something?...I'm just sayin'...

Well, it has many applications, such as 11-shot bracketing, taking shots every x seconds/minutes to create a videos (timelapse). This can even be expanded to trigger multiple angles from different cameras at the same time (like a wide shot and a close up in the same basketball action).
Have to admit though, I'm really drawn by the tweak/geek factor itself ^^

ok, that makes more sense. I've seen the price on canon's time lapse remote shutter thingy. Seems interesting but it of course comes at a cost. I've seen the HD time lapse shots of vancouver (external link) and I can appreciate the benefits of such a device. If I were serious about time lapse photography, however, I'm certain I wouldn't hesitate to buy Canon's more dependable version.

but I've hacked my nintendo wii so I too can appreciate the tweak/geek factor as well ;)
