These were taken from Bear Mountain during their last USASA event there for this season. This was the first time out with the new 70-200 F2.8L. I am totally blown away from what I have seen so far. These JPEGS were taken straight from my 7D. Zero processing.

They're sharp, but thats about it. If you look in pretty much any ski or snowboard mag, you're gonna see that they have the jump and landing (for the most part ) in the shot. Keep on shootin, they'll get better!

Um thanks but just because these pics dont show a lot of snow does not mean that I dont know how to shoot skiing. I just liked these 2 because the kids showed style... there are tons of pics from today that are wider and show where they are going and where they launched from. These 2 were just showed the kids style... Sorry for not posting cookie cutter magazine photos.... ;-)a

Hey 'bro, I think these photos represent how good the new lens is, not to mention the camera. Look like the new lens is a keeper my friend.

these are not very sharp for them being at f8, sorry but neither of these do anything for me.

1st- you can not see the persons face, there is no reference point, and you can not tell what he is doing, since he does not have the grab in tact... sorry but there is no 'style' in this shot.

2nd-good shot, more 'style' and you got the face, but the guy is very soft and there is no reference point of how high he is.

there is just no point of reference....they could be upside down for all we know. Really sharp clean, colorful images though

How well do you feel that the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II tracks for AF on fast moving targets? Did you have any problem getting AF to be locked on with this new lens? I shoot a lot of ski racing (alpine) and AF speed is a big issue for me.

Well my lens is not new or IS... But what I can say is that is can focus in the blink of an eye and be very accurate. I shot about 400 frames on the slopes yesterday and I had maybe 10-15 that were out of focus. And most of those were just a little soft.

The main thing I am working on right now is the AF setup on my 7D. I'm trying to find the best mode for what I shoot and yesterday I was in ZONE AF all day. This was my first day out with it so there are still more things to try, but so far I love this lens.

And to canonnoob... For some reason the images from photobucket really drop the clarity. My stock jpegs are a lot sharper.

the second is not a photobucket issue. It is soft entirely.

There's motion blur at the hands and on the poles because of what looks like a rotational trick, I don't think that there is any problem to do with the lens, the face seems sharp to me. I like the motion blur, it's rare that you are actually able to tell when rotational tricks are being done, even with reference points.

My mistake. I thought that this was taken with the new 70-200 mkII but as I re-read it I see that was a mistaken assumption on my part.

1/800 is not quite fast enough to produce a tack sharp image here.

For snowboard shots I aim for 1/1000 or faster, the faster the better which is generally achievable during the day without compormising with ISO.

Yup bump up the shutter speed and you should be golden. The softness is coming from the motion blur although as was mentioned the face or upper body area is sharp. Also, in that second shot if you PP out the lines and run USM it would be golden.
