Ask Recommendation for software to edit and convert video

Any recommendation for free software to edit and combine video and audio to one piece.
I got a EOS 7D and no experience on video editing.

On the paid version I recently got "Pinnacle Studio" to edit the 5D's files - it's paid - and NOT free as you'd like, but it works for me, also reads the .mov files

It might be CPU intensive - but the timeline works fine for me - rendering is CPU intensive though.
I've got a 2,5GHz Core2Duo in my laptop... and some people had problems with that Software (see Amazon reviews) - for me it has been good so far.

Go to audacity.com and download audacity.It is free audio editing software that will get you a start.
