nice work. i always enjoy seeing it.

when you are in the thick of things, i'm curious to know what gear you've got on you...obviously for some of these there is no photo pit, and the mosh pit can be rather aggressive...

i personally have a bad habit of wanting to be prepared for anything in terms of lighting, so i tend to bring a large bag (2 cameras, 4-5 lenses, sometimes a flash) which is really unwieldy. i need to develop a more spartan approach to certain shows.

Thanks Narlus,

Amount of gear depends on the situation. Recently, I have dared to leave more gear at home, but that depends on - for instance - if I'm there to get photos for a magazine/newspaper.

But for instance, the latest gig I did was Stam1na (one photo above) - for that I pretty much decided in advance that I wanted to do a homogenic (but hopefully not monotonous) series of wide-angle photos, so I had an ultrawide and a wider-than-ultrawide (sigma 12-24) with me only. See the six picture series here (external link). I'm aiming to be/become 'an artist', so I aim to get creative shots, which practically means that when I'm there to [try to] 'make art', I don't need to be safe - things like motion blur, unsharpness, grain etc are not taboo (just like they weren't when people were using ISO3200 Black-and-white film).

Some of this comes from the fact that I've been doing my first tour photo book lately. I've learned to be much more at ease photographing with whatever it is I have at hand. I have a big bag with me, but I've begun to leave it at the hotel room, backstage or tour bus (because it's big and heavy, duh). I already have a somewhat solid set of photos so I can really breathe and try new stuff and so on, and I have no pressure to have every piece of gear at hand at all times.

Nice ... certainly arty ... Love the wide angle ... can't get that close at the casino, sigh.
