Just spent the last couple hours sorting and culling a few images from my long weekend in Arizona for spring training. Thought I'd share this one to provide an example of stacked TCs.

Canon Mk II + 300 2.8 + 1.4x TC + 2x TC

2 questions:
1) Were they Canon TC's?
2) Did you notice any ill effects with the AF?

Looks pretty good with not too much IQ loss. It would be interesting to see a comparison of an image shot with both TCs (i.e. above image) with one shot with only the 1.4, one with only the 2.0 and one with none (and then cropped to the same composition) to really see any IQ differences. What was your ultimate f-stop with this combo?

well if he was shooting wide open..

no T/C's- 2.8
with 1.4x - 2.8 - 1 stop = 4
with 2x- 2.8 - 2 stops = 5.6

with both 1.4x and 2x- 2.8 - total 3 stops = f8

The camera always focuses at the max aperture, doesn't it? So, wouldn't that mean that no matter what aperture he shot at, as long as the system could go to f/8, autofocus would be possible?

Actually, the exif says this was shot at f/8, so it's moot. It also says the focal length was 600mm: do stacked TCs not register?

1) Yes, both Canon TCs version II. Believe both TCs need to version II to stack.

2) Focus would hunt a little bit, but not all the time, and once it locked on it did a surprisingly good job at retaining focus. I've shot a couple times with them stacked and my initial reaction is focus seems to hunt more often on stationary objects than moving ones. But my opinion may change after additional use.

It's probably a 75% crop, I'd say. I'll post the full frame shot when I am back on my laptop later this evening.

I agree. Very usable image in my opinion after some post processing. I do have some of Prince with just the 300mm and I can post one later with the same comp.

As other have said, ultimate f-stop was f/8.

From the exif and my experience in the field, the 1.4 TC isn't registered when stacked with the 2x TC. My camera settings actually read f-5.6 with them stacked and I had to adjust it to f-8; the camera didn't figure it out on its own.

The shot was taken handheld, 1/640 SS with IS on.

Awesome shot from a 300. I already own the 1.4 but will now buy the 2.0 considering how many options it will give me.

300 f/2.8
420 f/4 w/ 1.4tc
600 f/5.6 w/ 2.0tc
840 f/8 w/ 1.4tc + 2.0tc
1092 f/8 w/ 1.4tc + 2.0tc + 1.3 crop

All with IS

Very nice PQ... the 300/2.8 definitely takes TCs better than the 70-200/2.8

IIRC, the cumulative f/stop is registered for all TC's but the focal length is only calculated for the TC nearest the body.

Every time I see a shot like this, it makes me want the 300 2.8 that much more. That is amazing quality for stacking a 1.4x and 2x converter...

I will own this lens one day!

I'm actually pretty impressed with the image quality, its better than I've seen with stacking TC's like that before. F8, just be sure you shoot day games...Or point 3 or 4 2400w speedotrons at the batter.
