Largemouth Bass ....Awesome Fish!!!

I am a avid Bass fishermen and thouht I would try my hand at shooting some photos of the little green guys for my office wall. Last weekend was my first attempt and I really enjoyed shooting these fish.
I enjoyed shooting the fish so much I am going to go again this weekend and I going to leave my tackle box and rods at home. I thought I would share a couple of my favorites here. What do you think?

Not too deep, we use the Gary Yamamoto Senkos and the Bass tend to really suck them in. The hook came out with no damage to the Bass, we file off our hook barbs for easy release.

great shots - love to fish for those lunkers - my dream shot would be a big top water attack - I just don't how you could time it - they never hit when you have the camera pointed at them

That is the shot I want to try and get this weekend. I am going to have one of my friends fish on one boat while I am on another following him. He will fish only with top water for as long as the wind will allow. My 40D in AI Servo with the 100-400mm F4-5.6L did a real good job tracking my buddys top water last weekend but we could only fish for about an hour before the wind was blowing too much for top water. I will post pics if I have any luck!

I am planning on picking up a 1D Mark III this summer before Youth Fottball starts, I sure could use the faster fps right now though!!

Great 'timing' on the shots. Exposure good as well. Looks like you could have benefitted from faster shutter speed to stop some of the motion blur. Like anything else that 'moves,' a bass is capable of very quick, violent movements. I'm guessing 1/1250 might be a good place to start if you ever get that opportunity again!

Thanks Dave, and I agree, I need a much faster shutter speed. The first shot was a 1/1600 and still showed movement. I would like to see a little blur in some of the water but none on the fish if possible. I shot all day wide open @200 ISO, I am going to bump it up to 400 this weekend to see what happens. Last weekend was partly cloudy and I don't know if I was under a cloud when I shot. Hopefully I can get a mostlty sunny day this weekend to help increase my shutter speed!!!!

EDIT: Dave, if you would be so kind to loan me your 70-200 F2.8L IS I know I could get that faster shutter speed and stay in the 200 ISO range.LOL

I'm no expert, but what focus mode were you using? 1/1600 should freeze that bucketmouth solid. You may want to try setting center point focus. Also, are you using ai servo? I think that's the mode that will track the movement of the subject and adjust focus frame by frame to compensate...I'm sure somebody more knowledgeable will chime in...

Great shooting! I got some shots like that last year of a smallie, but not quite that good. Gator1970 is dead on with the setup. you should be fine at iso 400
