I have a 8GB Lexar USB jumpdrive that I carried in my pocket and that somehow must have got corrupted. Now no matter which computer I plug it into or whichever USB port I get the message shown below. In Device Manager it shows up under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" as an unknown device. Should I just toss the thing in the garbage or is there a way to get it working again?

I would see if you can get it replaced under warranty. If that fails it is likely toast. :(

That's a good idea. I buy these things and always forget that they may have a warranty period.

Hopefully they don't need anything from the original packaging.

Wow. Talk about great service!

I sent the corrupted usb drive to Lexar on March 19th via regular mail (Alberta to Idaho) and received a warranty replacement one today (March 30th) by UPS. No hassle and they beat their quoted turnaround time.

Thanks for saving me a couple of bucks Mike. I'd normally just chuck something like this in the bin and complain about poor quality.

Good news, Bob! My wife just ran mine through the wash and then asked me, "Is this black think I found in the dryer yours?" Amazingly it still works!

My 256MB Kingston got run through a handful of times and still works perfectly. I'm much more careful with my 8GB Patriot though. That is a lot of data! Of course it is basically backup so not too much harm if something happens to it.

I was a bit surprised at how easily this thing got corrupted. I use it in my car to play music and stuck it in my pocket to take in the house to add some songs. I ended up carrying it around in my pocket for a couple of days then when I plugged it into my computer it didn't work. Not sure if it came into contact with my car keys or some pocket change or if there was a bit of static inside my pocket.

After this I gave my kids a reminder to be careful relying on these things and to ensure they backup their schoolwork somewhere else.
