Morning\Afternoon\Evening

Since recently aquiring a 7D, I have noticed an issue with the RAW converter in CS4 which is causing me some concern, and I wonder if anyone else has got the same problem.

I first noticed it when I took a shot of the interior of a church with a stained glass window at the rear. I didn't have my tripod so I thought I blend two exposures from one RAW image. When I came to drop the exposure level to pull back some of the detail from the window, the entire window area went magenta, bummer.

I tried a similar thing yesterday where I wanted to reduce the exposure slightly on a blown sky, same thing happened, magenta began to creep into the sky.

Anyone else had this or know whats causing it?

Cheers

I haven't noticed that, and i've done everything with 7D files from pushing 3 stops to pulling back three stops. Make sure you have the latest ACR - open bridge and choose help -> updates.

This most likely has to do with the saturation level ACR assumes for your camera. By saturation I mean a fully exposed sensor level.

Here is an excellent discussion of this topic:

http://translate.google.com …ir=es%7Cen&hl=EN&ie=UTF-8 (external link)

it is a google translation from Spanish of one of Guillermo luijk's discussions of raw. Guillermo is "_GUI_" here on potn.

Try the same exercise with DPP - or, try dcraw and specify a different saturation level.

Good luck!

This is just a stab in the dark ... any chance the Shadow and/or Highlight clipping warning is on? And when you start making adjustments it's actually the pixels being clipped that are being highlighted?

Here is a sample of the problem from the 7D, as posted in the above article:

Read the article, I think you'll find it illuminating (ha!). Make sure, as stated above by Tim, you have updated ACR to the latest and greatest version.

Yeah, the translation can be confusing in an already tech-heavy subject. At least your knowing that this is the issue will help refine a google search for clearer articles. I know enough about this stuff to be able to fill in the translation errors, but I can appreciate that trying to decipher translational errors in addition to the technical material is rough.

Just a quick update, I downloaded ACR 5.6 and everything now works perfectly.

Thanks for the help everyone
