While some of the 7D issues are probably due to user error, or not taking the time to learn what is an admittedly complicated AF system compared to other non-1-series Canons, there are a certain number of respected photographers who have expressed concerns that RAW files from the 7D simply don't compare well with files from other Canons.
This might be a nice exercise to see how many "learned" the AF system and were subsequently happy, how many sent it to Canon (and they may well fall into the group who needed to learn the AF in the first place), etc., but regardless, I'm convinced something's amiss with the 7D that goes beyond learning to use its AF system. I've seen too many experienced photographers struggle to get simple center-point shots of still subjects with good contrast in good light that are sharp in comparison to 40D/50D and Rebels to think it's just "newbieness" that's leading to all the complaints.
MY POINT EXACTLY!!
In over 400,000 clicks with my 40D, I have never once thought or I should say... worried about focussing issues as I do with the 7D. I have reviewed all the different ways to focus my 7D. I shot an entire weekend at Sebring, over 4000 images with 3 different quality lenses, 70/200 2.8L IS, my 24/70 2.8L and the Kit 18/135 with SOFT images.
I am eating pizza right now and the thread I started with images focused on still items in our shop driveway show how soft this camera is. I just got the new replacement from Canon today and out of the box those are the examples its giving me. Certainly not something I want to take to the racetrack in hopes of capturing a car moving at 140+mph and think a sharp image is going to produce a great print worthy of blowing up on a wall poster!
I am completely dissatisfied and if there is a user error I will be the first to take criticism for not knowing how to push the right button. However... my other works with the 40D certainly would show I know what I am doing around a camera.
