Ok guys I just bought a gripped Canon 40d off craigslist yesterday for $450. I wasn't planning on buying other body but can't resist on the price for it. The girl didn't know how to check the actual shutter count but guessing around 50k but when I got it and checked it is around 70k. Damn that's high!

I can say right now the camera works wonderfully. I just really worry about the shutter life. Please say this is a good deal :(

I think you did good over all
I frequently see all 40Ds at around 600$, many times without the grip even, so i think you did well
I woudln't worry about the count that much, count should;d be good up to 100000 clicks i believe

I have seen a lot of 40Ds go for around $650 and some on eBay go for $700 so the worst you are out will be a $200 repair bill if the shutter dies. If the shutter is going strong right now and the camera is clean I would not worry about it and have fun with the camera.

Shutter's rated for 100000 on average so you could shoot 30000 or more without trouble. Most 40D shutter problems happened on the low end it sounds like, not the high end so it could go on for years. $450 with grip sounds like a steal and even $650 with a new shutter is a fair price so no worries.

You could confront her on it and see what she says. Maybe she'll offer you a bit less and met you up to give you some cash back. That's a substantial amount more wear than you were quoted, even if it was a guestimate. To me it's irrelevant that you got a good price one it, you bought it based on the thought of a certain hazy condition of the camera, and it turns out to be much more used than was represented to you as.

Always bring a backup for an important event, even if you're doing it for free for family/friends and even if the backup is a P&S or a film body.

I think 450 is a steal. I paid $600 for mine last week. :(

The grip alone is a hundred buck so you really paid $350 for the 40D. That is a steal. If you got extra battery that came with the grip then it is even better. Enjoy.

I did talk her down from $550. I might try to ask her but I'm not really desperate to get some cash back unless the camera died in just a few weeks.

and from the response you guys posted I guess it is a good deal. Now I love my life :)
