(first posted in the wrong section by mistake...sry bout that)

Hello guys

First I'm new to canon. I recieved my first dslr camera a month ago (a 7D) but I've been shooting alot with my brothers D80 and a bit with his D700.

Now I need lenses (yet I borrowed the cheepest 18-55 kit lens). I'd like a wide angle, a "walk around" lens, a tele and maybe a prime (probably 50 1.4 or 1.8 dunno yet)...I think I'm pretty sure about everything exept for the walk around one.

I first thought about the 17-40 L but I like fast apertures and the FL is pretty short. Then the 17-55 2.8 is usm for obvious reasons.

But today I went to a store where I saw the 24-70 L (second hand) for ~$1'100.

Since where I live the 17-55 2.8 is usm cost the exact same price (hood and LP-1219 included) I was wondering wich one you guys would choice.

What country are you in?

I had the 24-70 on my 40D, that lens was fantastic from build quality to image quality but I really didn't like the wide end. I now have the 17-55 and couldn't be happier, it's a great walk around.

If you're going to get a wide angle lens, something like 10-20mm and don't mind changing lenses I'd get the 24-70. Try the lens at the store to see if you like the range. I'm not getting and ultra wide anytime soon so the 17-55 is perfect for me.

I'm pretty sure i'm going for the tokina 11-16 for wide angle...That's one point for the 17-55.

There are a lot of threads about 24-70 vs 17-55 on a crop. Most people will tell you to get the 17-55, but there is no right or wrong here. We are also some who prefer 24-70 on crop. It is really up to you.

Previously Canon. Now Fuji. (-And loving it!)
