Hello
A few years ago I read about a 35mm negative to .jpeg service. I want to be able to send a company a few books of negatives, and they send back CDs or DVDs with original negs. I'm looking for something easy..I once heard of a company that weighed your negatives to find the total price

Does anyone have experience or know of a comparison website for this kind of service?

Add to original post: I've got about 1,000-5,000 family pictures I want to scan

I've used ScanCafe (ie. scancafe.com). They always offer discounts of some sort so get on their email list and you'll save a few bucks.

ScanCafe seems to be the most mentioned of the scanning services. I've read several good reviews on them.

I have had around 40,000 scans using scan cafe. Excellent service. They are highly recommended.

Can you get them scanned as 16/48 bit TIFFs? I'd think that JPEGs would compromise the scans.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Not to come across as a total idiot here, but wouldn't a scanner with film carriers
offer the most flexibility with color correction and file formats as opposed to
a third-party service?

Sorry if I sound ignorant, which I am with film; I simply don't use or have film or negatives.
If I were faced with this for myself, I'd probably want to have as much control of the process
as I could realistically take on. Perhaps a third-party service eliminates a lot of the variables,
however.

But I only threw this out there so that I might become more educated.

What about doing them yourself? I've seen a lot of film scanners and they aren't that expensive to buy. have a look here. http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ner&N=0&InitialSearch=yes (external link)

Doing it yourself is fine if you don't mind spending hours and hours for nights/weeks/months on end working on it. I scanned about 1500 of my father's slides with a Minolta Dimage slide scanner back in 2002....took me about three hours a night and four months. You tell youself you're only going to spend an hour tonight but then it seems to stretch.

Nearly 10 years later I've decided to send the whole batch to scancafe.com and have 'em do it. With the 20% discount coupon they sent me (get on their mailing list) it's going to cost me just over $700 to scan 2700 slides spanning 1956-79.

As I recall, the main reason why I only originaly scannind 1500 of the 2700 was much of them were "travel shots" with no family members in them. At two in the morn, one tends to know want to take the time to scan slides of the Grand Canyon.
