I am thinking about sending my 70-200 f2.8L lens to be cleaned and calibrated. I bought it used and so far I love it. Just thinking that a service might be a good idea because I do see a few little specs of dust inside. Any thoughts/experiences on getting a lens serviced?? Thanks!

dust will not have any issue. just shoot with it. dust on the rear element is the worse but you can clean it off

Yeah, don't worry about a few specks of dust. It might bug you but it won't show up in your pictures.

I personally wouldn't bother sending it in if it is working fine.

I had my 85 f/1.8's AF adjusted and the flat rate repair charge was $120. I had my 70-200 f/2.8 repaired and the charge was $158. These were both in the last couple of months.

I would expect it to cost you somewhere in between those numbers, assuming nothing is wrong with it.

dont send it in unless focus is off. Chances are it will come back perfectly calibrated but not to "your" camera body. I have had that happen to me where i send in JUST a lens and when i get it back it no longer works well with my camera body but when i send in lens and body every works perfectly.

It's going to be something like $150 minimum. I just had my 17-40 come in from repair (with dust that wasn't there to begin with too, i might add!) and it was only $17 for parts and like $150 for labor. I'm a bit upset with Canon repair as this is the 2nd time when I've sent a lens in for repair, it comes back with something else that didn't exist the first time.

One of the reasons I have thought about sending it in is because I have noticed that it is not quite as sharp as my tamron 70-200 F2.8 SP DI lens that is brand new. I cant believe I just said that but it is what I have noticed. But then again I have not shot them both on the same day in the same conditions.
