Looking for some feedback from people who have owned the MKIII and have either traded up to a MKIV or now are lucky enough to own both.

Does it feel like a significant upgrade to the MKIII or is it more like a MKIIIN,are you as blown away by the difference between the 2 or was it not as bigger move forward as you expected.

As i now only take pictures for my own personal enjoyment i am torn in between selling my MKIII to upgrade to a MKIV or keep the MKIII and add a 5D MKII to the collection to replace a rather old but much loved 20D.

In use the two cameras feel about identical (which I like, because I liked my 1D3 plenty).

The 1D4 seems to be cleaner from ISO1600 to ISO6400. I was not happy with the 1D3 if I needed to print 12x18 or larger above ISO3200. With the 1D4 I'm willing to stretch to ISO6400. This was big to me personally because ISO3200 = f/2 = primes where I shoot while ISO6400 lets me use f/2.8 zooms.

Thanks very much for the reply.

Just waiting for my 1D MK III to come back from Canon as its gone in for the sub mirror fix and a service and then will have to make a decision as to if im going to keep it and get a 5D MKII or sell it and jump in for a 1D MK IV.

Actually, I was trying to make a similar decision a couple of months ago. I was even debating whether to sell the 1d3 or the 20d, if I got the 1d4. What I like about the 20d is that if I want something smaller and decent to take on a trip, like Disney, it's pretty ideal for that...although the S90 P&S might be a better alternative. I've gone back and forth about selling the 1d3 since getting the 1d4. At first, I wanted to thoroughly check out the 1d4 before giving up the 1d3. Then it was a fear of maybe having to send in the 1d4 for service at some point and having a shoot coming up where I'd really want a 1d body. Then I started looking at the prices of 1d3's that people were selling and thinking it was worth more to me as a backup than what I'd get for it if I sold it. Anyway, with all this debating, I still have the 3 bodies, but the only one I'm using is the 1d4. It feels very much like the 1d3. I like the extra megapixels because I tend to crop a lot. I like the improved ISO performance. I find the autofocus of the 1d4 to be an improvement (more keepers when I shoot sports). I like having the video option on occasion. I love the auto-ISO feature of the 1d4. And I still love my 1d3, and if I needed to use it as a backup, I wouldn't feel like I was giving up a ton...but it's an easy choice when both are available!

Hi mate, wish I could afford / justify buying a MKIV ayway think they are overpriced :( I couldn't resist getting a 7D like some of the features which the 7D had that the MKIII doesn't i.e. auto-iso, video etc. Hope you and the family are ok.

Cheers

Hi Nick,
Hope your keeping well and yes family are fine thanks,Have not been active on the forum for sometime and yes i know what you mean by the MKIV being overpriced especially here in the UK.
Have had an insurance claim that just paid out so thats the only reason i have some money at the moment, hence trying to decide between selling the MKIII to get just the MKIV as a main do it all camera or keep the 1D MKIII and add a 5DMKII to the collection for all the family pics and use the MKIII for any motorsport at weekends.

Its working out a tough decision at the moment as the MKIV and the 5D MKII both have lots going for them but i still seem to be going towards just having one camera to use all the time like the MKIV as it seems to have the best multi role spec at this time in the Canon range.

I have been inactive on this forum for quit a while as well, lost interest over the winter. Now the racing season has started i'm keen again :) I'm hoping the 7D will be my number 1 camera and the MKIII my backup. I'm going to Brands this weekend to watch Jon so will have to see how it performs.

Wish I could answer that. I will say that it reminds me a LOT of the AF on my 1D2, but there are a few years that passed between ownership of the two bodies so I have no direct comparison available. I will say that the 7D's AF is very good for action.

Looking forward to your report. I'll have mine in Bristol, TN this weekend for the NASCAR race. I'll get some reasonable shots, but the track isn't as photographer-friendly as it could be with that huge safety fence messing up the view.

Ah fences:mad: I have a lot of experience shooting through fences:rolleyes: . This is one reasons I purchased the 7D because it allows Auto-ISO in manual mode, I will be able to set the camera wide open f/2.8 and set a shutter speed what I like and let the Auto-ISO deal with the exposure. The MKIII on had auto-iso in AV and TV modes.

from what iv read i get the feeling that the 1dmk2/1dmk3/1dmk4 and the 7d are all very close in how fast they AF .
The 7d does seem just a tad slower than my mk3 getting the focus from the start but it is very close.
I think they are all so close the bigest diffrence would be more to do with if the photographer is having a good day or bad day Not which of the above are being used :)
Rob.
