I like the range of the Canon 17-40L and was wondering, what other lense (sigma, tamron, etc) are out there in that focal range?

i like a really wide lense but nothing as bad as a fish eye. maybe 12 to 15mm max

from what i've seen anything that is as wide as around 12mm doesn't zoom past 24.

12mm is almost stupidly wide on a FF. If that is what you are looking for then the sigma 12-24 is really your only option. Slightly longer but still very wide on a ff is the Canon 16-35 L.

edit: unless of course you might want a prime in which case there are a few options... most notably the 14L
