(current lenses in sig)...

I'm not entirely looking to buy any lenses right now... we just purchased the 50mm 1.8 II lens. It will be here in a couple of days. I have found I get MUCH BETTER quality pictures from soccer (which I could find more examples of ones that I've taken) that are outdoors as opposed to wrestling (which is indoors with less than ideal lighting sometimes)

But I am entirely curious as to what the best lenses for sports would be... (namely, wrestling and soccer ...)

here are some of my current shots
(wrestling.... taken with my kit lens. NOT happy with the quality, AT ALL)

(soccer ... all taken with zoom.... found one example... can't find the rest of the pics from the season! :()

For slightly longer reach than your 50, the 85 1.8 is a commonly used sports lens.

The last two wrestling shots aren't nearly as soft as the first. I actually like them. But I can see why you'd be unhappy with the results, especially in comparison to the sharp soccer photo. I'm just getting into some sports and fast action photography, so I'm not sure what lens to recommend. Good luck!

wanted to add that I don't have the EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens yet .... just ordered it... should be here Friday. Too bad wrestling season will be over with before I get to use it! :( (may have to talk son into doing a tournament just so I can test it out! haha)

My experience says that f/2.0 is usually required for indoor sports. As someone mentioned, the 85 f/1.8 is pretty nice and won't break the bank. Shooting at 2.0 will allow for 1/500 (easily) at ISO 1600 usually. With your current lens lineup a flash would help ... IF they allow them.

The outdoor soccer shots are fine.
