Great day at the Bison Range. Finally had a small herd on the winter drive. One large bull (1200+ lbs est) lots of females and last years young. Interesting when you have to look up at the Bison as you sit in your car. You forget how big these beasts are.

The range was established in 1908 to help reestablish the nearly extinct bison. One great success story.

Great pics. I have been there several times. Have not seen a single bison. Always end up taking photographs down the road at that private herd. Good work. I thought they ear tagged the "wild" bison.

No ear tags but they have a brand of their birth year. They change the position of the brand to show the decade.
There were some with radio collars to track movement.

Is there a special time that they let them near the scenic route. I have seen them a mile or so in the distance. Never close enough to shot. My buddy and I talked to the gal in the visitor's center and she suggested the private herds down the road and over past Ravali. Nothing wrong with that I guess, but my wife says they should call The NBR the National Lion Range or the National Anything but Bison Range.

They rotate the herds in various pastures to prevent overgrazing. I worked there 4 summers and drove the 19 mile route several times a day. One time nothing on the road, several hours later elk, deer, goats, bison, sheep, rattle snakes, bear etc. Best time is early morning and late evening.
One visitor would come into the center and ask where all the animals were hiding, a few minutes later another would come in with wildlife pictures galore. GO figure......

I was there once, drove the entire loop and saw very few bison at the end. There is so much room for them to roam (cause that's what buffalo do).

My wife and I made a last minute decision to stop there this summer coming out of Glacier and it truly is an amazing place. We saw the Bison, Antelope, Big Horn, and a couple of the biggest Elk I've ever seen that afternoon. It truly is an amazing place that very few people make the effort to see.
Thanks for sharing!
