Forgetful A95

Since I bought my A95 in February, I've used the USB cable connection to download images. Bought a card reader and another CF card yesterday.

This morning I turned the camera on and it beeped (just about the first thing I ever did with it was mute the sounds). Looking around the menus it seems a whole load of settings have changed, but it hasn't completely reset to defaults because ISO is still set to 50 not auto, and the date/time is still correct, but compression has gone from SF to F, and AF from Flexizone back to AiAF, plus the sounds being turned on.

Does the camera store these settings on the CF card? I assumed it had some internal NV storage, but the only thing I've done differently is put in a brand new memory card, plug the card into the card reader, then back into the camera.

Odd, my now deceased Olympus C2000Z used to do this all the time, but never had the Canon do it until now.

all those settings are stored in the camera, not on the card. did the camera go out of batteries or something like that? my A95 never did that.

No, the batteries remained in the camera the whole time, and I shot about 80 more pictures on the same set last night.

No more problems with changing settings though and the memory card has been in and out of the camera a couple more times since.

Hopefully just a one-off glitch.

iharding160, I have exactly the same problem with my A95:a beep when switching on and the menu language is reset to English as well as some of my preferences such as: sound (I set it to "mute"), AF preference and others. Some settings, as the described ISO value and my values for picture quality remain saved.

I used the camera for little over half a year and the described behaviour has appeared several times since then (maybe once a month, but not by any means regularly).

Haven't found an explanation for that, yet. It is not related to battery power, as the problem appears with fully loaded batteries as well as with batteries that have been in the camera for several days.

Anyone else encountering the same problem?

I just got myself a A520. Having the same problems too.... Due to my work, I have to mute the camera and every about 4 days, there will be one instance in which when I power up the camera, the sound is switched on. Cant explain why either.....

My A95 seems to change compression and and picture sizes without me telling it to. This weekend I shot about 20 pics, when I downloaded them I noticed that some were around 1Meg and some were 3Meg, with different sizes, either 2592x1944 or 2048x1536. I did not change any settings, or remove the memory card or batteries during this time period.
Should I contact Canon?

Could be the "date/time battery" is run down or dead and that would result in settings being lost.

Se p.22 of your manual re how to recharge it, but don't know if it can be replaced by user.

i just got my 510 today, and read this, and then read the manual pg 137 and it shows you how to change the date battery. i doubt the a95 would be much different. it even claims that the battery will probably die shortly after purchase, because it is installed during manufacture. why they don't just include the battery seperate is beyond me.

I would definitely contact Canon. I have owned an A80 and an A95, each of which was able to keep my preferences for each camera setting. The Canon people are usually pretty easy to deal with. Good Luck!

I will be contacting Canon. I don't think my problem is the date/time battery since the camera remembers the date and time accurately. I will post the results.

BTW, I just got a used 300D, based on the quality of the images from my A95. In my opinion, better than my Nikons.

After "talking" to Canon, who were very prompt in answering my question, it seems that my larger image size was a result of the A95 deciding to add a flash assist to the portrait mode. I'm not sure I like this.....
