On the 7D, I clear the card in camera, not format, just erase...

Is the file count supposed to reset every time?

I am ending up with an awful lot of files named IMG_0001

Thanks

Hi Jim, that's why you need to rename the files when you download them to your computer. Lightroom or Aperture make that very easy.

There is a function in your menu for setting how the camera does file numbering. I don't have a 7D but in your manual Contents look under the Image Settings section for File Numbering (maybe in the Tools menu section). File Number should show up in the index as well.

... or A Better Finder Rename. I used ABFR until I switched to Lightroom. On import I rename into this format:

2009-12-27_19.28.59+IMG_0498.jpg

By prepending the date/time to the filename, I guarantee desired sorting order, and no longer really care about the numbering. I'm guessing that years ago Canon figured that nobody would ever have 10,000 shots so they settled on the naming scheme that wastes four of the eight characters that the MS-DOS filesystem affords.
