On the 7D, I clear the card in camera, not format, just erase...
Is the file count supposed to reset every time?
I am ending up with an awful lot of files named IMG_0001

I don't have a 7D but in your manual Contents look under the Image Settings section for File Numbering (maybe in the Tools menu section). File Number should show up in the index as well. Tony
