Hi all, first time posting in this section. I tried my hand at shooting some smaller flying things in my yard and came up with these. I gotta say, they don't hang around still for long !!!

Not sure if anyone can ID them, mainly just for interest sake.

oh, and would you say butterfly or moth? What is the difference if anyone knows?

Any tips on shotting these little guys will be gladly absorbed.

Great photos! All I can tell you is that is a butterfly, due to its wings remaining vertical at resting. Beyond that, I have no idea. :D

It's definitely a butterfly but I'm not sure what kind. Perhaps a type of fritillary?

Thanks everyone for the heads up on it being a butterfly.

Doesn't really matter what sort, I learnt the difference between a butterfly and a moth today!

Nice set of images. It looks like it may be laying an egg under the leaf in the second image. I'd go back to that spot if you can remember where it is to look for a caterpillar later on.

Also here's a link to tips on photographing butterflies

Great series of shots, although the second one seem to have something special in it. I like how the details from the butterfly`s wings and the first leaves were highlighted.

Stephen: yep, definatley laying an egg. I only saw this when I looked at them on my PC as it was so fast.
As far as going back to look, I really had no reference point as I was simply following it around like a crazy thing! It's quite a big bush too, I'd be looking for ages.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out, they are certainly a challenge!

belongus3: It would have been a nicer if it wasn't so grainy. I had to do a fair crop on it too which made that show up even more.

That's very pretty.
Incidentally, there are exceptions to both rules regarding resting wing positions on both moths and butterflies.

One difference between moths and butterflies is their antennae. Butterflies have clubbed antennae whereas moths have feathered antennae. I think that this is a defining diagnostic, although I'm prepared to be corrected!
