i just got a 285HV. i put in some rechargeable batteries (charged to full power), NiMH 1.2V, and it wouldnt charge up or fire. i put in some alkaline (1.5V) batteries and it worked fine. i checked the manual and it states that it operates on four 1.5V AA alkaline batteries, but offers three optional power sources. two of these are vivitar items, HVP-1 and PPG-1, while the other is NiCad batteries.

i figured that the problem with the NiMH was that they were 1.2V, but after looking for NiCad batteries they have the same voltage. so my question is, before running out to get some NiCads, do the NiCads also have to be 1.5V, or will the standard 1.2V work? where does one find 1.5V NiCads, if that is the case? does anyone have experience with Viv 885HV and rechargeable batteries?

cheers

I run my 285's on Eneloops all the time and they work great. The Eneloops are rated at 1.2v and 2000mAh. I do not think the 1.5v vs the 1.2v is your problem. How old are your rechargeables?

the batteries are only a few months old. i use them with my other flash (sunpak PZ42X) without problems. they are chicago electric brand (from harbor freight, cheap and i needed something at the time) and are marked as 2200mAh 1.2V.
