Rented this lens from www.lensrentals.com (external link) (first class outfit) and its just what others have stated for birding. I just need some better light for use in the next few days. Indeed see myself purchasing one of these in the near future.

Great shots! It is a great lens, and has been around quite a while, so I was able to find an older one for quite a deal(The only way I could afford it). Enjoy it

Yep--my 400 5.6 stays on my camera all the time. I love it!

Nice series of shots!...bought a new one from Adorama beggining of Feb. after much debate. Sooooo glad i picked the 400 f/5.6! You will be happy you made the purchase. Good luck and have fun when you do!

Great shots, Toney. I'd love to have one of those myself. The 100-400 just doesn't measure up consistently. Of course, I'd also like 500mm.

Very nice photos. The 400 f5.6L is a great bird lens, just don't rent the 500 f4LIS, you'll get
spoiled...
