Hi everyone ! I'm new at this site and I would like to introduce myself, I'm from MIami, 38 y/o, graphic designer and very passionate about photograpy.

My experience with Digital cameras comes from a Sony F828, not a bad camera but I found that sometimes the resolution can be an issue as I do a lot of image retouching and I need something better to work with.

I like to do portraits (indoor, black & white), and I want to do sports (motorcycle racing) as well as nature, and macros (bugs)

My question is, I'n new to Canon cameras, I really like the Canon 50d, my budget is somewhat limited, so I was thinking buying just the camera and two lenses, the Canon EF 70-200 mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens and the Canon EF F1.4 50mm USM DSLR Lens EF f/1.4 50 mm.

Will I be ok just with those two lenses or do I need also the 28-135 that comes standard ?

Here's a couple of photos I did:

I will really appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Best,

Martin

Welcome to POTN, Martin!

With the 70-200 and the 50 you won't have a wide angle lens. And even with the 28-135 you still won't, since 28 mm is a "normal" lens on the 50D. There's a lot of overlap between the 28-135 and the 70-200. You'd have roughly the situation I have with my 28-105 and 70-300 - I seldom use the 28-105.

Don't know what all you want to shoot, but I sure couldn't live without a WA lens.

The Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS would take care of that nicely, but it's around $1K.

If you don't need the f/2.8 aperture, the Canon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS (kit lens on the Rebels) is a great bargain at $170. Optically it's very good.

Tamron also offers a less expensive 17-50 f/2.8 with or without stabilization (they call it VC) which gets high marks from its owners.

I've never used the Tamron, but I have both of the Canons.

if your going to shoot sports at night FB or others, you need the 70/200 2.8 L usm, if your going to shoot indoor BB in gym or vollyball you need 85 1.8. F/4 is just not going to work in low light when you shoot sports

i can't read the exif data on your shots...but i'd imagine there is a 35mm focal length equivalent listed somewhere...you could see if it falls in the range that you'd be buying...

If money is tight I would suggest trying to pick up a used Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 instead of a EF 70-200mm f/4. As Butch Cassidy said, f/4 will not cut it.
