Canon hand straps are for body + grip only. Here are some suggestions, knock yourself out.
As indicated by Kristy a few posts above, a Camdapter tripod Arca Swiss style quick release plate with 2 tangs for a hand strap and a neckstrap can be added to the bottom of the camera. See the Camdapter web site for a pic. Thus the Canon E1 handstrap or Camdapter or other traditional handstrap can be used, even if you camera does not have a grip. Hand straps are great for making a heavy camera/lens combination comfortable and secure to hold. Another small company that make a very competitive product, a tad lighter plate than the Camdapter, is image tooling.

The more recent (last few years) L camera plates from Kirk and RRS for bodies without a grip, also have tangs for handstraps.
