Hi took tihis picture this afternoon an notice ants are moving around the other insects. just curious on what the ants are doing. are they protecting or are those their meal...thanks

LordV Macro Photo-Lord of the Year 2006 More info | Mar 20, 2010 02:30 | #2 Nice one- yes the ants are milking the aphids for honeydew they excrete. In return they "farm" and protect the aphids. Plant sap the aphids feed on is high in sugar and low in protein so they excrete excess sugar. Try parking a car under a lime tree in Summer and you will find it covered in tiny sugar drops. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/
