This is my first ever attempt at 1:1/1.4:1 insect macro, so these may not be the best photos in the world, lol. I couldn't believe how insanely difficult it was to get the focus right, especially hand held! The mantids are around 2cm in length, and the DoF was around a quarter of a millimeter, so getting their eyes in focus proved to be quite a challenge!

Here's two of my favourite shots from a series of many:

I'd love to get some thoughts on the lighting and the composition as well as anything else you feel needs attention payed to it. :)

C&C much appreciated, thank you! :D

In my opinion you nailed the composition and lighting. The pose in the second is awesome! I know what you mean about the focus, i've been trying to do the same kinds of shots on young stick insects. One last note on the mantids.... I WANT ONE :)

Wonderful captures :)- as you found out macro is rather hard on the eyes with the focus and DOF :)
