Actually, the lighting was really bad. It was the middle of the afternoon with the Sun high in the sky shinning through the branches of a big tree casting broken shadows all over. No matter what angle I positioned myself it didn't help. But after making some some Shadows and Highlights tweaks in PS these are the results. Without those tweaks the areas where the Sun was shinning on him or that big tree root looked almost blown out.

The 2nd is fantastic! I love it when wildlife can be captured doing what they do. Such a cute face on that one! Agreed with above poster, DOF is great on them as well, too often in less than ideal lighting situations we see it becoming too narrow, but this isn't! Great job.
