Yeah removing it and cleaning underneath would be a good idea. If any grit gets under the armor it can be a problem. But perhaps less of a problem than a crash.

It seems to me that last spring there was a thread about "I dropped my camera/lens/combo, etc." and that soon led to scores of people posting they had begun dropping their gear. I hope this isn't the beginning of another trend...:)

my neck always gets a workout when I shoot. i never aim my camera unless its strap is around my neck securely.
