So I am frustrated and disappointed to have to make a thread like this, but things happen.. I was hiking up Devils Tower in SD and to make a long story short, someone ahead of me kicked loose a softball or so size rock and it struck my camera/lens. The camera seems to be functioning fine, but the rock split the lens. Luckily I was holding the lens with one hand so it never actually fell into the dirt ect... Don't ask me how I was not struck... Anyways here is some quick pics:

It appears that the screws between the 'bracket' and the zoom ring have broken out. The element does look like it has some dust, but I don't think there are any significant scratches. So...

Is this repairable/worth it? I sent an email to Sigma without photos and haven't gotten word back.. What do you think?

Totally repairable.

The lens failed where it's designed to fail. Unless you really hated that lens to begin with, send it in and get it fixed.

cool, how does that process work? Do I send it in, they assess, then send me an estimate or what?

How much do think it might cost?

There's probably a flat fee as a base price with a final estimate over the top of that.

Your decision will be value of lens Vs final estimate.

I can't imagine this being a difficult repair however.

Since it is there, is there anything that I might ask them to check on top of what is broken, or would they do a 'full' inspection?

Generally, they will calibrate and clean it as part of the repair.
