Maybe it is my imagination but when I shoot tethered the battery seemed gone quicker.
I do use an active USB cable to extend the length but it should take power from the computer.
Any clue?

I don't think you can charge via USB.

You are correct. Tethered shooting, while really cool and very useful for many projects, drains the battery faster than any other activity besides shooting in sub-zero temperatures. I don'e even want to think about combining the two circumstances.

You can either have lots of spare batteries ready, or purchase an outrageuously over prices AC adapter for the camera, that Canon should have supplied with it in the first place (at least for any camera above the Rebel). Talk about opportunists. And the AC adapter is just a cord with a battery shaped connector that plugs into the battery well - Unlike my Canon camcorder, that simply has a mini round jack for an adaptor.

Photography - can't live without it - can't afford it.

And, I believe the AC adaptor has to be plugged into your Canon charger if I'm not mistaken.

Not on the one for the 5D2. It has its own "brick" - and is, best case, $120-130 US.
