I'm a bit of a math nerd, and use a really high end math software, Mathematica. I'd like to write a program to make these calculations, mostly for fun, thou I might find it more useful then the sight. It would probably run faster on my iPhone the loading this page would w/o wifi connection.

So is anyone aware of the Algorithm? Or even have some information on how to calculate DOF

There's a free app called "Field Tools" or something to that effect that's decent for the price.

Cool. Still interested in the mathematics behind it. Just for the Math nerdiness.
plus I love just know the how and why behind things.

I created my own just writing the formulas into Excel. It's very simple, you can get all the relevant equations at Wikipedia.

Couple notes - set you CoC as a user defined variable and you can adjust DOF to match your own pickiness as well as intended print size.

Don actually posts the formulas he uses right on the site. Scroll down past the green box and you'll see

Depth of Field Definition

Hyperfocal, near, and far distances are calculated using these equations (external link).

Circles of confusion for digital cameras are listed here (external link).

You might also want to look for The Ins and Outs of Focus by Harold Merklinger.

Its quite technology dated as it was written for film cameras in the 90's but seems to have a lot of the math your looking for.

This site has for free download .

or Google for more places that have it online.
