They are essentially tinted glass.

They are supposed to filter all wavelengths (colors) equally and in doing so, simply dim the scene - hence the term "neutral". The reality is that they do allow more red than other colors - not by much, mind you, but enough to give a little bit of a magenta tint.

The good ones are pretty expensive. I think my 9 stop filter was about $200.

Not sure what you bought, but that seems well overpriced. The 10-stop B+W filter in 77mm size is less than $100 at B&H.

I stand corrected. It is a Hoya NDx 400 (9 stop), 72mm, which Adorama has for 139.35 - clearly less than $200, but still, a Benjamin and a half, with tax.

I bought a set of nd 2,4,8,400 for $40 off ebay and they work fine.
When I start making money with nd filter shots I will buy the same set of filter but really expensive

Still trying to find the difference between my $.99 poloarizer and my friends $150 dollar one.....

I've heard to see the difference is to place both CP on a piece of white paper and look for a color cast difference. The paper should stay white.
