Picking up a 5D Mark ii this week. Should I check serial numbers...I know for the original 5dc serial numbers starting with 0=2005, 1=2006, 2=2007, 3=2008.

Is there any way to determine if the 5d2 was made in 2008, 2009 or 2010?

I have never heard of a "system" for the 5DII.

I guess firmware installed is the only way to tell. I had 1.1.0, so it could have been made between June 2, 2009 to Dec 17 2009.

The firmware could have simply been updated.

FWIW : I collected my 5D2 in late December 2008: They were in very short supply until spring 2009. Serial number 0330219xxx

Now you'll need some more numbers to understand the pattern and make any sense of what you are offered.

I think i may have figured out Canon's Serial numbers for the 5D mark ii

The first 2 digits may represent what month of the product cycle the camera was made.

For example;

Sept 08 -> 00
Oct 08 -> 01
Nov 08 -> 02
Dec 08 -> 03 [This makes sense with Luke Cerns serial number]
Jan 09 -> 04
Feb 09 -> 05
Mar 09 -> 06
Apr 09 -> 07
May 09 -> 08
June 09 -> 09
July 09 -> 10
Aug 09 -> 11
Sept 09 -> 12 [Makes sense with mine(Nerv) and dkim3202 serial numbers]
Oct 09 -> 13
Nov 09 -> 14
Dec 09 -> 15
Jan 10 -> 16
Feb 10 -> 17 [makes sense with aperkins serial number]
Mar 10 -> 18
Apr 10 -> 19
etc etc

Please note that this theory could be completely incorrect

I just bought one today, serial number starts with an 18, and firmware is 2.0.3

That would make it a pretty new camera, if your theory is correct NERV, it was only manufactured this month.
Although, there is a shortage of them here, so that is a possibility.

I could see that since you have firmware 2.0.3 installed. BTW, will you install 2.0.4? Haven't had the courage to install it yet and I'm leaving for South Korea on monday and don't want it acting up after I upgrade.
