So after months of being locked in a dark room writing code and not doing any photography I've been asked to go over to Shanghai and do a technical summit and training session. I'll probably be spending 2 weeks there, possibly three depending on how well things go and I'm looking to revamp the kit a little as it's unlikely I'll be back over in Shanghai anytime soon so I want to capture as much as I can while there.

I've got about $7k from some recent stock investment I cashed in on to play with and I started thinking a 5D2 + 16-35L + 85L would be a nice little rounding of my current kit once I sell the 10-22 and 40D. Feel free to chime in and help me spend my money, the forum has never failed me in that regard before :)

p.s. the 1D4 is off limits, I come home with that camera and the wife will test it's durability by cracking me over the head repeatedly with it ;)

Last time I got out of the dark room I was locked in I bought a 5DM2.

If you're not shooting fast action sports I'd go for it.

Not as much as I used to that's for sure, I was a motorsports guy for a while until the scene really dried up around here... now I'm just looking for something to start taking on my travels :)

The 7D was certainly tempting but after owning the 40D's and then a 1D3 I'm not very fond of the APS-C's rather narrow depth of field sometimes. Decisions decisions :)

For travel photography, the 5DMII, 16-35L, and 85L would be amazing! Couple this with a Gitzo 1541T and you would be set...

It looks like you've got a good plan there, plus your 70-200; although you may not find you need that kind of reach in Shanghai. If you really want some fun, head out to the animal park while you're there. The lemur island is a riot and you can get right up close and personal with the little guys!

Yeah, the 70-200 seems like I wouldn't use it much. We plan on going to Beijing and even trying to get a flight to Huangshan and other surrounding areas. If anyone here has been to Shanghai or the surrounding area I'd love to hear suggestions about where to go. My summit will be two days but then I'll probably have another 10 days of vacation time to get out and do my thing.

So I'm thinking the kit would be: 5D2, 16-35, 85L to pack in the bag. I thought about bringing the 35L but I think the 16-35 will work better there and the 24-70 brick I'll probably leave at home as well.

Thanks folks!

Also, get there with a tripod and go down to The Bund at night. You will have some terrific city light and water shots from there.
In general, downtown areas at might are nicely lit up in various colors.

Sounds like one helluva setup. I'd bring the tele for landscapes.

I suck at Photoshop.

Heh, the wife wants me to pack as light as I can for the vacation days so I'm not so sure I'll bring the 70-200 but after thinking about it I'll probably go with the 5D2 + 35L + 16-35L + 24-70L which should cover just about every length and scenario I can think of.

Next up is storage and batteries!
