I am thinking about buying a 7D, it will be an upgrade from my much loved 400D. What size CF card do I need, one that will allow me to take videos if I want to?

I would get at least 4GB, but 8GB would be more practical.

8GB-16GB if I where you. I like getting about 500+ shots per card.

If you are going to be shooting on High Speed (and why not on a 7D?) don't get anything less than 8GB. 4GB will probably net you ~130-150 RAW shots. 8GB probably between 260-290.

Of course, when you start adding HD video, you will chew through space even quicker. So bottom line, go with an 8 to start and see how that plays out for you. And always have extras.

Thanks, I was thinking at least an 8. That will take videos too? I am not sure I'd be doing that much but if it's there I'd like to be able to use it.

I only use 8GB for my 5D2, but I always have 3 of them. I occasionally do video for short bursts. But if you are going to do serious video segments as a primary tool, then consider the 16 or even 32GB cards.

I am sure someone who does more video will note this thread and provide some advice.

I'm waiting for Sandisk 16 Gb UDMA prices to come down. I'm using Extreme III cards (4 and 8 Gb) at the moment.

I'm gonna keep using my 8GB with my 1 week old 7D until I find a good deal for higher capacity CF cards.

I have a 4GB (30MB/s), an 8GB (80x) and a 2nd 8GB (233x)
Got a killer deal on the 80x 8GB ($9! Was a closeout item that had been returned)

I have one 8GB 300X and one 16GB 533X. You really only need a 133X for video from what I remember.

If you shoot JPEG, 4G/8G ... doesn't really matter. It is not likely you can fill it up. If you shoot RAW, I would say get at least 8GB, or the biggest you an afford. 7D fullsize RAW is like 20+MP per file, so 8G only gets you 400 picture, not a whole lot. Not to mention if you upgrade to 5DII or the rumor 30+MP 5DIII, 8GB doesn't seems to be big enough all of sudden.

Watch out for old stock SanDisk Extreme III 8GB, I picked up 3 of them in Jan from Adorama for less than $5 total after the SanDisk tripple rebate
