This guy showed up in my yard today. No idea what he could be and I could find nothing in my Perterson's field guide that remotely resembles him. Anybody recognize him?

Seems like I saw one like him on here before but don't remember the name as I figured I'd never see another one. Nice shots by the way.

Thanks, I received suggestions in two other forums that is likely a European goldfinch cross probably an escaped pet.

Ron -- How far from the bird were you in this shot?
The first shot made me think of Gary Coleman saying, "What you talking about Willis?" It may be the finch's posture but I'm smiling nonetheless. :) nice shots

looks like a eruo goldfinch mule may be a goldfinch x canary

it could be a hybrid GF x bullfinch but I doubt that cross

yes many years ago I used to keep border canary's and a few captive breed native species

so I have seen both the mule and hybrid up close

I think more important question would be how in North America. I don't think there are any European goldfinches here in the wild. Unless it escaped from a cage, it would be nice to know that we could have some of these pretty birds in the States. It would probably adapt well in the northern part of the country with cold winters and mild summers.
