Considering selling my 85L II and 135L for the new 70-200 II

Alright, I've absolutely loved me experience with my 85 f/1.2L II and 135 f/2L. The tack sharp images and completely blown-out backgrounds are absolutely astonishing. However, the 85L's AF has been the biggest push towards the new 70-200. If the 85's AF wasn't so slow, I wouldn't even consider the move. However, I will be shooting more weddings, event , and possibly night life photography where a zoom would be helpful. I've always looked to The-Digital-Picture for lens reviews, sharpness crops, and such and it seems like the 70-200 is just as the 85L and 135L. I'm just having a real hard time letting go of these primes lenses...and honestly don't know whether I should or not and wanted to get some opinions.

I miss my old 70-200 f/2.8 IS' AF speed, IS at times, and the ability to zoom, but I also love the IQ of the primes, weight, and such.

See for yourself:

This video was also very persuasive as well:

I've also been considering trading my 135L for a 70-200 f/2.8...

What do you think?

After seeing reviews of the new 70-200 II IS USM I really do not blame you, if you don't need the large aperture of 1.2 or 2.0 of those lenses and typically shoot at 2.8 I'd say go for it!

Funny how in the vid the guy has the canon 5D II, the canon 70-200 and a nikon strap for the camera =)

Still waiting for TDP's review as well. From everything I've seen here and elsewhere, this new 70-200 is awesome and most are impressed enough with the differences between it and the mark I that they are saying its worth the extra $$$.

^^ haha yah I noticed that on digital rev, he always wears a nikon strap out with any canon camera haha.

but yah the pictures taken by it looked great wide open, if you can use 2.8 wide open and have that great range in one lens with no switching if you don't need any quicker sounds great to me. more Gear Acquisition Syndrome... stupid GAS

Mine was also sold due to its slow AF. Incredible lens but very very slow for general use. I went for the 70-200 MKII, and IQ was close enough to the 135L, I also sold it. Yes, it is that good. Now, I am waiting for my 200 2.0 to arrive. And this comes from a guy who swore by primes.
At times, I feel like I miss it, but when I think about the slow AF, no regrets. I am waiting for the sigma 85 1.4, hopefully much cheaper, fast AF, and comparable IQ.

Depending on what is the most important factor to you. I value the following the order .. bokeh > sharpness >> AF speed

How about getting the 85 f1.8??...speed is a lot faster than 85L ... I know its no 70-200II replacement but if you're only looking for AF speed alone then getting 85mm f1.8 might be another alternative. Its lighter, 1 1/3 stops faster and 1/8 the price of 70-200II :)

If one was trading up from a 70-200 f/4L IS or the 2.8 IS I to the new 2.8 IS II, then yes.

I would not sell my 85L II and 135L for the 2.8 IS II.

Another option I've been considering is trading the 135L for a 70-200 f/2.8 non-IS...

Any thoughts there?

For weddings and events, the 70-200 f2.8 IS ought to be good enough. It's been good enough for quite a few years now and just because the MKII came out, doesn't mean it's no longer a viable option. Ain't nothing wrong with the lens. I certainly would not give up an 85LMKII and 135L for it. No way, no how.

I would give up the 135L trade 85L II with Sigma 50 and then buy your dream lens.

Nikon/Fuji.

Yeah, after some reconsideration, I've decided NOT to get rid of the 85L II. I'm still considering swapping out the 135L for a 70-200 non-is though. I'm just tired of missing shots because I'm switching lenses...
